eNewsletter March 2012

Dear Everyone,

Hi! And how are you all? It was a mixed month in February in terms of work. However the one thing that I was unhappy about was the fact that Arsenal football club got out of the FA cup and most certainly out of the Champions League and all because they have a stubborn manager who is out of touch with reality. And this is what I want to talk to you about this month i.e. of individuals putting more emphasis on the past rather than the present and future.

The other day, I was having a conversation with one of my participants and somehow the subject drifted over to bosses. This individual became very emotional and ranted and fumed over his ‘terrible’ and ‘stupid’ boss. He went on and on and I could see that he was very upset even though he had left this boss and the company about five years ago. I sympathized with him, but I also felt that he was his own worst enemy. He was looking at events in the past to make him angry and upset in the present. His boss was not around, but for him was still a source for his anger and frustration. Using a metaphor, when you drive and look only at the rear view mirror, what will happen? Yes, there is a great possibility that you will be involved in an accident. However if you look to the front, then your drive will be safer and smoother as you are concentrating on the present and the future. My advice to this participant was to always move forward not backwards. There will always be bumps in the road of life. We must never allow these negative experiences to come back to haunt us. We have all made our mistakes, we have all had our bad experiences and we have all asked ourselves the question, ‘what if’. The critical thing is that, we must realize that we cannot change the past, but we certainly can influence the future. Too many times we look back and forget the future to our detriment.

In my life, I have realized sometime back that in order to get the things I want in life I had to let go of the past and focus on the future. To have regrets is human but to allow these regrets to consume us and not move forward is certainly the worst thing we could do. My personal advice to everyone is, “Never look back to the past. You can't change anything. Learning from the mistakes and moving forward is more important”. If there is anything to look back upon, look only to the positives like your past accomplishments, your happy moments and good things that have happened to you. These are things that will certainly serve to motivate you and are the ones worth looking back to. I assure you, life will become better then.
